Day 82-84: Amsterdam

In late Autumn, on Friday, October 2, 2009, on a cold, windy afternoon, we pulled into Amsterdam, our final destination in Europe.

In 82 days, we have ridden over 20,000 km from Calgary to Vancouver, South Korea to Vladivostok, through Siberia, Mongolia, Kazakhstan, Ukraine, Poland, Czech Republic, Germany, Austria, Liechtenstein, Switzerland, France, Luxembourg, Belgium and the Netherlands.

When we passed the sign for Amsterdam, we high-fived, then tried not to run into any of the hundreds of bicycles riding everywhere. Amsterdam is one cool city. People on old style bikes where everywhere. Beautiful buildings. Canals. Boats. Our first impression was that it was a fantastic city, and we hadn't even been to the Red Light District yet. :)

So we got the cheapest hotel we could find, which for 2 nights, was more than we spent in Mongolia in 10 days, including hotels, meals, fuel and food. Amsterdam is one expensive city.

We did the tourist thing first, and went on a boat cruise through the city. That night, we went to the Red Light District, which is a crazy place. Not just the prostitutes in the windows and the sex shops, but for all the people, we didn't see any garbage, or bottles thrown about. The people were respectful and happy. No drunken idiots. It was an interesting dichotomy from the absolute nuttiness you would expect.
