Day 99: Carlsbad Caverns

We visited the world famous Carlsbad Caverns.  They are one of the largest and most beautiful cave systems in all the world.  We hiked in through the natural opening and did the entire tour, which is fascinating.

They were first brought to the publics attention and explored by Jim White in 1898, when he was just 16 years old.  He then spent the better part of his life, exploring and promoting the cave system.  In the beginning, he was the only one who could guide people in the cave, as there was no map.  He had memorized his way through the cave from his many visits.

If you ever come this way, we highly recommend you see it.  It is now a World Heritage Site.
