Santa Rosalia, Baja Mexico

Today was a light riding day, only about 218 km to get from the Pacific side to the Sea of Cortez side, where we are in Santa Rosalia.    Our hottest day yet, at about 32° Celsius, we were fine while riding, but hot when we stopped.

Again, some of the most incredible desert scenery, with huge cactus (cacti?) and endless hills.   We went up and down some very mountainous areas as well.

It is heartening to see the amount of work they are putting into the roadways here, with many, many work crews out on the road building bridges and widening the already (mostly) excellent highway.  Compared to the roads in Russia (bad) and Mongolia (none), Mexico is a breeze.

As I stated in one of the earlier blogs, while Mexico is certainly not up to the standards of prosperity we enjoy in the Northern part of the americas, it is nowhere near as poor as some of the other countries we have rode through.

We are in a pretty good hotel, still fairly cheap at 510 pesos per night (about $42-$43 dollars), it has a huge courtyard, and is built onto the hill overlooking the Sea of Cortez.   Troy and I practiced Yoga tonight by the pool, on some cliffs overlooking the ocean, while Cory and Neal got some chicken and vegetables for a BBQ...

We stopped at a turn in the road to grab a drink and admire the view, when we noticed this grave marker.  They are fairly commonplace along the side of the road.  When we looked over the cliff, we noticed the tanker and truck.  Putting 2 and 2 together to figure out what happened isn't that hard.

  2. Hey guys,

I think your SPOT is on the wrong setting (Check In versus Track). According to the tracking map, you are still in Guerrero Negro. Hard to stalk you now!!!!! Has been fun to "ride" along with you using your SPOT location and the Google Street View. The Baja highway has been mapped.

Sounds like you are having a blast.

    Stay safe.

    "The Stalker"!!!!! :)
