Riobamba

After a week we left Baños, heading south again but only for a short ride today.  We were heading for Riobamba, which is a medium sized town about 30 km from our goal tomorrow, which is the Volcano Chimborazo, the highest summit in Ecuador and the spot generally regarded as the farthest surface from the centre of the Earth at a distance of 6,384.4 kilometres.

I don't know what it is about this part of the trip (maybe it's the fact we are in the Andes), but we seem to be climbing a lot of really tall Volcano's lately.

The ride was spectacular as we took the short cut from Baños, not the main road.  The road we took has seen better days as it goes from decent if old pavement, to single lane rock, sand and gravel, passing by some amazing washed out sections.  It wasn't long, about 75 km, but it was fun.  It reminded me of Russian roads.

In addition to all our gear, we have added a passenger (Tutu, from Paris) who is riding with Troy.  So I have Troy's gear on my bike to make room for Tutu.  To say we are slightly overloaded at this point in the trip is an understatement.  Troy did shed a bit of weight today, but by accident when his top pack opened up and dumped it's contents somewhere over the 75 km.  When we got to Riobamba he noticed it.  He lost 3 litres of oil, some tools, and a few other items.  Not a lot was in the pack, as he had made room for Tutu's bags earlier in the day

We've booked into an absolutely wonderful Hostel called the Oasis, which contains beautiful gardens and rooms hidden behind a huge imposing wall,   Prices here remain very reasonable at $10 per person for a double, and $12 for me for a single.  Also the water in the shower is HOT.  Which is a big plus in my book.

The bikes are parked inside, behind a huge metal gate, safe and secure.

Packing up to leave Baños.

Our new friend Tutu, from Paris, who has been on the road for 10 months

On the road to Riobamba... Troy and Tutu.
Deep in the heart of the Andes, Ecuador, road to Riobamba.

Before we left Baños, I had to snap a picture of one of the many mannequins in the stores.  We've noticed the same thing all through Central and South America.  They all have enormous breasts.  :)
